Scam Alert: Mr Patrick K W Chan
January 28th, 2009I get spam all the time, but this one was so outrageous, I thought I’d share it with my blog readers. It’s from “Mr. Patrick K. W Chan” from “Hang Seng Bank Limited in Hong Kong”. The funniest thing about this particular scam attempt, it that it’s from a German version of Hotmail (Arcor.de) although you’re supposed to respond to a Yahoo email account. I believe it’s a good example of an “advanced fee fraud” or “Nigerian scam”.
(Before you read it, remember what we’ve talked about before to help you identify scam/spam emails: The email comes from a domain that is NOT the domain of the alleged company. Emails that come from free domains (in this case arcor.de or yahoo or gmail or hotmail) should always be suspect.)
Here’s the email:

Now, I’m sure all of you know this is a scam, but just in case someone out there, in the middle of the country (not that there’s anything wrong with that) , with dial-up (not that there’s anything wrong with that) has put this person’s name in Google search, I’m hoping this blog article comes up to warn them - this is a scam, do not reply to the email!

Hi Melinda,
I couldn’t agree more - except that these spammers usually aren’t that targeted, so I’m fairly certain that it has nothing to do with your being unemployed. They scrape email addresses from the web and spam them, nothing more sinister than that. But I’m sorry to hear you got emailed from them, it certainly is frustrating.

Hi Jill,
yes Mr. Patrick K.W. is being busy. I received mail a couple days ago, with a great business offer and written in most primitive Finnish! Coming from Hong Kong. Because, some time ago,I made enqueries concerning silk fabrics to an address in Hong Kong I thought that this might have something to do with it and answered with two short questions. Today I received a big mail with the fabulous money transfer offer, if I pretended to be the last next of kin of an “oil sheik” or something..
Well, that’s for that…:)
