Meet the author: Jill Olkoski
Jill has a MA in Clinical Psychology, a BS in Computer Science, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
She currently owns Aldebaran Web Design in Edmonds (near Seattle WA) and enjoys educating her clients on topics related to small business website design.
In Jill's previous life, she spent 17 years in the engineering and quality organizations of a Fortune 100 tech company.
Aldebaran Web Design now offers phone consultation services for folks who don’t have a website, or have a website designed by another developer.
These consultations can be used for general web design questions, WordPress blogging lessons, ECT (ECommerce Templates Online Store) help, or questions about Search Engine Optimization. And you don’t have to have your website designed by Aldebaran Web Design to use this new service – it’s available to everyone.
Cheers!

If you’re using a Mac, and using DreamWeaver to design websites, sometimes you need a tool to compare two files. I use TextWrangler for this, and wanted to list the instructions here in case someone else finds it useful (and because I’m tired of looking it up myself).
“Though the competition is extremely close…Firefox 4 is strongly favored by HTML5 processing, boot time, and memory usage,” Rosenblatt concluded. “Overall, I’d judge from these results that Firefox 4 is the winner this time around.”
“In terms of safety, Chrome and Firefox seem to be the browsers of choice. The two were both unchallenged at this year’s PWN2OWN hacking competition, according to ComputerWorld.”
My clients know that I work out of a home office near Seattle WA. I used to work in a big corporate office with lots of human coworkers. Today I captured a video of one of my current coworkers, a cute male Anna’s hummingbird:
This video was captured with an iPhone 3GS. This little fellow was officially counted in the Great Backyard Bird Count going on this weekend.
Tom Linde LICSW, is one of my therapist clients. Recently he was interviewed by our local Seattle news regarding his thoughts about a recent tragic house fire and it’s impact on those left behind.
Tom has an excellent blog on his website where he helps readers with issues such as addiction and depression. I think Tom can be the next Dr Phil.

Sometimes clients see things in a certain way in their browsers that I’m unable to see. Often the fastest way to clear up the confusion, is for them to send me a screenshot. Send a screenshot of something on the web is easy to do once you know the steps.
I often have people contact me who are in various stages of breaking up with their current web designers. Sometimes the termination is friendly, sometimes it’s not. Here’s what you should know BEFORE you attempt to fire, or otherwise end your working relationship with your web designer.
I was contacted recently by WebHostingSearch.com and asked if I would be interviewed about my hosting company. Loving DreamHost.com like I do, I said “of course!” and you can go here to read my interview on DreamHost, my favorite hosting company.
Updated: I have left DreamHost after 6 years because they fail to communicate changes that severely impacted my business, and the businesses of my clients – I now recommend BlueHost.
A client sent me a link to this article on Slate.com that gave a fairly scathing review of one of the common open source content management applications called Drupal. While I’ve never used Drupal, after reading this article, I don’t think I ever will.
Update: DreamHost, for no announced reason, cancelled live chat. Apparently they could not keep up with the number of complaints (that’s what a support person said). Then they recently (08/2012) reinstated it for VPS clients.
I no longer recommend DreamHost to my clients, I recommend BlueHost, who has always had 24/7 chat AND PHONE support (which DreamHost does not.)
For the past month or so, I’ve been able to use live chat to communicate with the folks at DreamHost.com, my web hosting company. While their support ticket system has been excellent, they’ve now improved their support system by adding a live chat feature for some of their customers. I’ve used it several times, and didn’t want to write about it until they officially announced it – and today, they did!
