The Power of S – Should You Add An S To Your Keywords?

November 26th, 2012

A potential client who is a golf teacher asked me to review her existing website. It got me to wondering about whether adding an “s” to lesson would bring in more traffic – do people search for “golf lesson” or “golf lessons”? Here’s the answer.

The question is easily solved by using Google Trends.

Look at the remarkable different in search engine traffic:

Wow, that’s a big difference. Way more folks Google “golf lessons” than “golf lesson” apparently because lesson more often comes as a series of events, hence folks use the plural version when searching.

Now, I don’t know if Google would send you traffic for “lessons” if you only had “lesson” in your website content. Maybe it would. The point is why not check out the plural version of potential search traffic when things you sell could come in more than a single thing/event and then match that word exactly.

Another excellent use of Google Trends to determine keywords for your website.
