Selecting An IPY: Using Internet Yellow Pages To Get Local Search Traffic
December 8th, 2007I have a website client who wanted to know what the best internet yellow pages. So I did some research and here’s what I found:
This article on comScore Internet Yellow Pages/Local Search Traffic Comparison puts Yahoo at 22%, YellowPages at 18%, and YellowBook at 5%.
This article on ” Internet Yellow Pages: Worth The Effort?” puts SuperPages.com at 32%, YellowPages.com at 28%, Yahoo Yellow Pages at 22%, and YellowBook at 11%.
And before you sign up to one of the big internet yellow pages, I recommend you read this article on how to optimize your internet yellow pages listing.
Here’s sign up info (note several have free directory listing available):
Yahoo Yellow Pages: “To add a business listing, you must go through your local telephone service provider, who sends business listings to Yahoo! We can’t add listings directly to the database. All listings must come to us through our data provider, InfoUSA.” (Click here to go to InfoUSA - All you apparently need is a landline telephone.)
SuperPages: SuperPages offers free business listings and other paid options.
YellowPages.com: YellowPages also offers free business listings and other paid options.
YellowBook.com: YellowBook also offers free business listings and other paid options.
Getting a free listing is the first step. Once the listings are up, see if they include a link to your website. Hover your mouse over the link and notice the URL to see if this is a straight link or some fancy redirect. Straight links have a better chance of helping your search engine rankings, while redirects don’t. But your main reason for getting listed in these directories is to simply be found by the people that use them. Don’t expect them to boost your search engine rankings, simply expect them to increase the probabilty of customers contacting you by finding your listing.
Now having said this, sometimes I do see listings from directories showing up on organic search engine rankings, and that’s good, but your website should be optimized to blow past directory listings, and if it isn’t, please see my articles on “SEO” in this blog.
