No, Google does not use the keywords meta tag

May 28th, 2012

I’ve had several clients ask me this, because either they’ve noticed it on other people’s websites or had some SEO person tell them this – that they need a keyword meta tag.

Google has not (for many years) used this meta tag, and therefore, it’s simply a waste of time to put them in a website. If you don’t believe me, listen to this video from Matt Cutts from Google:Here’s the video: “Google does not use the keyword meta tag in web ranking.

Q: Does Google ever use the “keywords” meta tag in its web search ranking?

A: In a word, no…. Our web search (the well-known search at Google.com that hundreds of millions of people use each day) disregards keyword metatags completely.

So no, no, no – and if you find an SEO company who tells you they do…well, they’re either really out of date or… 🙂
